More stars for Masters race

Another six touring car legends have signed up to compete in the BTCC Masters race at Donington Park on September 26. Jeff Allam, Julian Bailey, Frank Biela, Kelvin Burt, Frank Sytner and Patrick Watts, who all competed in the British Touring Car Championship during its zenith in the mid-1990s, have agreed to join the six former champions already confirmed for the event

This means that just five more drivers are needed to fill the grid made up of the identical front-wheel-drive SEAT Cupras used in the Spanish manufacturer's BTCC support series.

The latest confirmed entries join an all-star line-up that includes former BTCC champions John Cleland, Robb Gravett, Tim Harvey, Alain Menu, Jason Plato and Gabriele Tarquini while double world touring champion Paul Radisich has also agreed to take part.

"When I heard about this race I thought 'great idea'," said 1996 BTCC winner Frank Biela. "Then I got the 'phone call from Alan Gow and said 'yes' straight away. It will be great to see some of the old faces again and catch up on old times.

"We will all go into this thinking it's more about fun, but I'm sure that very suddenly it will become very competitive for everyone."

Sytner won the championship in 1988 and the two-litre class in 1990, while Allam, Bailey and Burt were all race winners. Watts however, despite his hard-charging approach and reputation as a fast qualifier, never stood on the top step of the podium.

"I never won a race in the BTCC," he said, "but then I never had the car. Besides I didn't want the publicity. This time we are in equal cars so it's my big chance!"
