Honda's Chilton is youngest works driver

Seventeen-year-old Tom Chilton has been confirmed as the youngest ever works driver in the history of the British Touring Car Championship after signing for Honda this week

Chilton, who raced a year-old Vauxhall Astra in the BTCC's Independents' Cup in 2001, will partner Alan Morrison in Honda's line up this year. A third Civic, possibly for Matt Neal, could also be a part of its plans.

Speaking at the AUTOSPORT International show, Chilton said: "I got a call from Arena Motorsport last week to tell me I'd got the drive, and I've been smiling ever since. Honda is one of the best manufacturers in the world, and to drive for them is amazing."

Chilton, who only passed his driving test last year, eclipses James Thompson as the youngest works driver in the BTCC. Despite his tender age, Chilton believes he can race on level terms with reigning champion Thompson and the other established BTCC stars.

"I think I have a chance to finish in the top three in the championship," he said. "That is my aim this year, along with winning some races."
