Brands 2: First win for Hines
Luke Hines scored his maiden British Touring Car Championship victory in the second race at Brands Hatch as he led home a Vauxhall 1-2-3. VX Racing team-mates James Thompson and Yvan Muller finished second and third
Hines won the race at the start, getting off the line beautifully from his front row slot and easily beating poleman Robert Collard into Paddock. He then made the most of Collard's robust defence of second from Thompson and Colin Turkington (MG) early on. Turkington later dropped back after running over the grass at Graham Hill bend.
It took Thompson and Muller eight laps to get past Collard, by which time Hines was a long way up the road. Thompson caught Hines with six laps to go, but despite various tactics aimed at pressuring the 21-year-old, Hines held on to win.
"Having Thompson behind me for six laps was tense stuff," said Hines. "Even after I crossed the line it didn't really sink in that I had won. I actually thought James was waiting until the last lap to make his move."
Anthony Reid (MG) finished fourth after a superb drive through the field. Having punted the impressive Sean Watson-Smith's factory Proton off at Paddock for fifth, Reid spent most of the race pressuring Rob Huff's SEAT. Huff drove excellently to frustrate Reid until the SEAT turned sick. Turkington finished fifth, close behind Reid with Tom Chilton sixth.
Poleman Collard fought hard to remain in the top six but was forced to stop when his bonnet flew open on the pitstraight and race one winner Matt Neal missed the race when his starter motor failed to work.
