Weekend review and results round-up

The most exciting Monaco Grand Prix in years might not have ended in the grandstand finish expected as Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button's three-way battle was somewhat diffused by the red flag and tyre changes - but it was still an epic weekend and another big endorsement of the 2011 Formula 1 rule and tyre package

It was also a rather destructive event, with both Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov taken to hospital after their heavy crashes, though they escaped serious injuries.

The accident made Monaco safety a hot topic, but it was overshadowed after the race by Lewis Hamilton's furious outburst about the officials following the penalties he had received for his collisions during the race.

Monte Carlo wasn't the only scene of incredible action over the weekend. An already-thrilling Indianapolis 500 built to a jaw-dropping conclusion as the dominant Ganassi cars faded and rookie JR Hildebrand emerged as a certain victor... only to crash at the very last corner and hand the win to Dan Wheldon and fledgling team Bryan Herta Autosport.

There were late surprises in the World Rally Championship and NASCAR too. Sebastien Ogier seemed set for a comfortable Rally Argentina win after problems for rivals Jari-Matti Latvala and Petter Solberg, only to roll with three stages to go. He limped to the finish but was overhauled on the very last stage by Sebastien Loeb - who recovered superbly from a one-minute penalty - and Mikko Hirvonen. In NASCAR it was Dale Earnhardt Jr who suffered the last-gasp heartbreak as he ran out of fuel at Charlotte and Kevin Harvick grabbed the win.
