World Rickshaw Championship, Milwaukee

World Rickshaw Championship, Milwaukee

IndyCar - Milwaukee: The two-day race weekend at Milwaukee makes for a packed schedule, as does a support bill that includes Pro Mazda, Indy Lights and ... a World Rickshaw Championship round. It seems that someone named Kris Lacrnski set a new rickshaw track record in testing here yesterday with a best lap pf 4m03.27.

There will be 17 rickshaws on the track for their race, which is just over double the number of this weekend's Lights field.
MotoGP - Barcelona: Marc Marquez had a pretty quiet day (by his standards) in free practice, but he believes he made a lot of progress over the two sessions.

"I am pretty happy with how the day went. In the first session we were ninth, over one second from the top, then in the second session we cut the gap to half a second and finished sixth in the combined times.

"We still have things to improve and there are points on the track where I am still not comfortable. I have to improve my adaptation to the circuit and some details with the setup but the most important thing is that we have cut the gap and are working in the right direction."
IndyCar - Milwaukee: The phase that IndyCar refers to as 'Group A Practice' is over, and the track is now open to all cars. AUTOSPORT is contemplating the thought of actual Group A touring cars trying to race around the Milwaukee Mile.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: We're snapped out of our Group A reverie by James Hinchcliffe hitting the wall at Turn 2. It wasn't much more than a brush, and he's already back in the pits.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: And as expected, the session is quickly restarted. Last year's winner Ryan Hunter-Reay currently holds the fastest time.

We've seen a lot of smaller teams upset the giants this year, but they're going to have to break with tradition to do it this weekend: since 2004, every Milwaukee race has been won by Andretti, Ganassi or Penske.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Just under 10 minutes left, and Marco Andretti leads the times ahead of team-mate Ryan Hunter-Reay.
MotoGP - Barcelona: Stefan Bradl, who crashed in the second practice session this afternoon, has admitted that he was "a bit aggressive" when he fell at Turn 10.

However, he also says his LCR team needs to find "some small improvements to make the bike more stable in the corner entry".
IndyCar - Milwaukee: The first session ends with Andretti in P1. The top three: Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Josef Newgarden.
DTM - Lausitz: AUTOSPORT has finally arrived in East Germany on a very sunny afternoon. No DTM on-track action until tomorrow morning and no Formula 3 European Championship either; but there is German F3 and Carrera Cup Germany to keep those here entertained over the weekend.
DTM - Lausitz: And when we say no DTM action, there is of course 'roll-out', which has been reintroduced for the first time in 2013 this weekend. Roll-out is really just a public shakedown, with cars not allowed to have their wings attached for the very short session, which starts in about 10 minutes and runs for 15.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: As the teams and drivers prepare for their second practice session, Texas winner Helio Castroneves has offered his thoughts on the penalty his Penske team picked up after the race last weekend:

Castroneves shocked by Texas infringement
DTM - Lausitz: A nice bit of benevolence from series promoter the ITR. Earlier today it handed over €300,000 to help victims in three towns in this region of Germany that were decimated by floods recently. The mayors of Meissen, Pirna and Herzberg all recieved cheques for €100,000 each to help the effort from, respectively, Timo Scheider (Audi), Timo Glock (BMW) and Christian Vietoris (Mercedes).
IndyCar - Milwaukee: A stroll through the IndyCar Fan Zone in Milwaukee proves revealing on several fronts. For starters, it was nice to see big queue of people waiting for autographs from Pro Mazda drivers. And second, it's possible to buy a Charlie Kimball shot glass for $1. AUTOSPORT's wallet was back in the press room, but watch this space.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: The second practice session has begun.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Caution for a track inspection. After five minutes of running. EJ Viso is currently P1.
Jason Leffler tribute, IndyCar

Jason Leffler tribute, IndyCar

IndyCar - Milwaukee: IndyCar teams have added tributes to NASCAR driver Jason Leffler to their cars for this weekend's race following the 37-year-old's fatal sprint car accident on Wednesday. The decals were organised by Ed Carpenter Racing team manager Tim Broyles. Leffler was a former rival to Carpenter in USAC.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: The session has restarted, and two-thirds of the field head straight out.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Twenty minutes into the session, and the current leader is Ryan Hunter-Reay.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: After 40 minutes the session is still green, Hunter-Reay is still quickest, and not a lot is happening. If you're looking for something amusing in the meantime, the clip of Alice Cooper's Milwaukee history lesson from Wayne's World can be found here.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Someone - we believe it's Alex Tagliani - has a damaged tyre, and we're back under yellows for a track inspection. Just before the flag came out, Takuma Sato went to P1. There's currently 12 minutes still on the clock.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: A bit of news while we wait for the green flag: up to a dozen IndyCar drivers will take part in a test at Pocono on June 25. AUTOSPORT understands that the remaining teams will test at Mid-Ohio at a later date.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Green flag with five minutes remaining.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: A couple of late flyers take Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay to P1 and P2, with Takuma Sato hanging on for third-fastest.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: The rickshaws are on their dummy grid ahead of their first race. Lest you think this is some sort of gimmick, they actually have three 30 minute races on the schedule this weekend.
NASCAR - Michigan: With 18 of 44 cars having set their qualifying times so far, Carl Edwards is leading the way from Aric Almirola and Matt Kenseth. So far, six drivers have managed an average speed of over 200mph.
NASCAR - Michigan: 30 cars have qualified now. Edwards is still on top, while Kasey Kahne has gone second fastest. Youngster Austin Dillon has just got himself into the top five.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Currently in the middle of Indy Lights qualifying, with the big cars preparing to come out for their turn in about half an hour.

In other news, the weekend schedule was thankfully misleading regarding the 'three 30 minute rickshaw races' thing. There are three 30 minute breaks with five minute rickshaw races shoehorned into them.
NASCAR - Michigan: Qualifying result: 1 Carl Edwards; 2 Kurt Busch; 3 Kasey Kahne; 4 Paul Menard; 5 Aric Almirola; 6 Joey Logano; 7 Austin Dillon; 8 Matt Kenseth; 9 Kyle Busch; 10 Juan Pablo Montoya

That was an agonising wait for Edwards, who was the sixth car on track and then had to wait for the rest of the 44-car entry to run their laps to see if his lap would turn out good enough for pole.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Green flag for IndyCar qualifying. First cab off the rank is Helio Castroneves, who sets the bar at 167.169mph. Decent, but you'd have to think that's beatable.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: And indeed, it is beatable. Charlie Kimball and Simona de Silvestro fell short, but Takuma Sato was able to better Castroneves' time. Before he had time to celebrate, James Hinchcliffe went faster still. The Canadian's 170.418mph two-lap average is a new track record.
Charlie Kimball shot glass

Charlie Kimball shot glass

IndyCar - Milwaukee: For the fan who has everything: the Charlie Kimball shot glass. At the equivalent of 52p, it might be the best value piece of racing merchandise on the planet.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Ten cars in and the grid is currently an Andretti 1-2-3, with Hinchcliffe still on top ahead of Hunter-Reay and Viso. There are 14 cars still to come, so plenty of time for things to change yet.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Marco Andretti goes to the top with a 170.515mph two-lap average. It's now an Andretti 1-2-3-4, and there's the very real chance that it will stay that way. Seven cars left to run.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Andretti's plans for locking out the first two rows have been thwarted by Will Power, who has just gone third-fastest.
IndyCar - Milwaukee: Last driver Ana Beatriz is halfway through her run, but unless she has a hidden nitro switch for the second lap it's not going to be fast enough, which means that Marco Andretti will start tomorrow's race from pole ahead of Hinchcliffe, Power and Hunter-Reay.
That's the end of the action on AUTOSPORT Race Centre Live today. We'll return tomorrow morning, where highlights include MotoGP at Barcelona, DTM at Lausitz, GP3's standalone race at Valencia and more from IndyCar's Milwaukee event.

Bruno Spengler

Bruno Spengler

DTM - Lausitz: Bruno Spengler's win at Spielberg a fortnight ago moved the reigning champion into the points lead.

Mike Rockenfeller is Audi's lead man in second, while rookie Marco Wittmann's excellent start puts him fourth behind round one winner Augusto Farfus.

Mercedes has not begun well: no wins yet, top man Christian Vietoris 28 points back in the standings and concerns over continued poor qualifying form.

Championship standings after three of 10 rounds:

1 Bruno Spengler 53
2 Mike Rockenfeller 41
3 Augusto Farfus 33
4 Marco Wittmann 32
5 Christian Vietoris 25
6 Dirk Werner 22

25 points for a win
DTM - Lausitz: AUTOSPORT has made the quick blast down the motorway from Dresden to the track on what is another glorious day in old East Germany. Practice is due to start in around five minutes.
