F1 Italian GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

We bring you all the action from the 16th round of the 2024 Formula 1 season at Monza

Daniel Ricciardo, RB F1 Team VCARB 01, Nico Hulkenberg, Haas VF-24, Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38, Lance Stroll, Aston Martin AMR24, practice their race start procedures at the end of FP3

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked out the front row for the Italian Grand Prix in a tight qualifying session at Monza.

The McLaren duo came out on top in what was the closest top-six in Formula 1 qualifying history as George Russell took third for Mercedes.

But with Max Verstappen the lead Red Bull down in only seventh and Ferrari back on form in the hunt for a home win, what will happen?

The Italian GP gets under way at 2pm BST.

Piastri set the fastest lap last time around and has a 1.8s gap on Norris in second, with Leclerc 3.6s off the leader in third.

A lot of marbles starting to form offline as Perez blasts past Ocon for seventh. Russell is right there with that group.

Sainz is 11.1s down on the lead group in fourth, and isn't busting a gut to close the gap. He's playing a longer game than the trio ahead who are all setting personal bests with each lap at the moment.

A 10-second penalty for Magnussen after his bump with Gasly. That could be crucial, given he is running low on wiggle room with penalty points. Two points would give him a race ban...

Norris last time by was three tenths slower than Piasti and drops 2.2s back. A bit of management now starting to come into play for the polesitter as he faces up to protecting a team 1-2?

It's another new fastest lap last time by for Piastri, who really has the bit between his teeth now. He's eking his advantage out to 2.4s.

We could soon have an intriguing battle between Sainz and the driver who is replacing him at Ferrari next year, Hamilton, over fourth position. There was just 1.5s between them last time by, the Briton a tenth faster.

A proper battle between Gasly and Ricciardo - the RB lunges to the inside at T1 but the former stoutly defends.

A dummy from Ricciardo into the second chicane outfoxes his rival and the Alpine gives up the position after running across the escape route.

Verstappen has fresher tyres than Hamilton, but his 7.3s deficit to the Briton in fifth is going to take some work to close down. A points swing is in the offing for Norris today, but Piastri could mean it isn't as big as he might hope...

Yet another fastest lap set by Piastri on the last tour has stretched his advantage to 3.1s, with Norris losing seven tenths last time by.

F1's latest debutant makes a nice move on Gasly for P15. Colapinto puts his Williams onto the back of Bottas with that.

On lap 31 Norris lost 1.7s to Piastri. Leclerc is back in the hunt for second.

Replays show that Norris ran wide into the second chicane and had to take the long route around the bollard, which cost him dearly and has dropped him almost 5s back from the leader, who now appears safe from a Hungary-style undercut.

In now comes Norris from second, and it's a 3.3s stop onto another set of hard tyres with 20 laps to go.

An attack from Russell into Turn 1 sees Perez get his elbows out. The Mercedes isn't given a lot of room and is forced to yield across the run-off.

"I don't know why I'm killing my left front so much," laments Norris over the radio.

Hamilton remains 1.3s behind Sainz as the drivers who came in later at the first round of stops continue to cycle around. Piastri now has a 5.5s lead on Leclerc.

Russell pits to try and undercut Perez but it was a poor stop - 4.2s - and that should give Red Bull the buffer it needs.

Sainz is 17.2s behind Piastri in third and has never looked like closing the gap on Leclerc ahead since he came out of the pits. Could he be trying an attempt at a one-stop here?

Magnussen may have a penalty already but he has absolutely sent one down the inside of Albon for P9 on the road. The Williams was forced to the escape road in avoidance.

Albon has been on the radio to Williams bemoaning indecisiveness - not the first time he has made that complaint this season.

Norris has got the hammer down on his second set of tyres and has the fastest lap of the race currently as he moves to within 1.4s of Verstappen ahead. The Red Bull man remember owes a second stop having taken two sets of hard tyres so far.

Here comes Perez into the pits a good stop sees him return back in front of Russell. Alonso also stopped for a second time.

"When it's possible to defend, do you want me to race him?" asks Verstappen as Norris continues to close. "Yes please," he is told over the radio.

Albon is again forced into the run-off as Verstappen and Norris progress.

"I don't think so, the front left is pretty dead," Piastri says when asked if he believes there is any chance of making it to the end on a one-stop strategy. Expect to see the leader in fairly soon.

And with that, in comes Piastri with 14 laps to go for another set of hard tyres. Leclerc and Sainz cycle into first and second positions, as Piastri rejoins ahead of the Verstappen-Norris tussle.

Hamilton meanwhile has committed to a second stop too, and rejoins sixth, a fair distance back from Norris ahead in fifth.

Russell gets past Perez after a very late defensive move down the main straight. That was eye-widening, very naughty.

True to his team's wishes, Verstappen is making Norris work here. The Red Bull driver sticks his elbows out as the McLaren hoves in behind with DRS into the first chicane. How long will he have to sit in the Dutchman's wheeltracks?

Now Norris does blast ahead starting lap 41 on the main straight into Turn 1, with Verstappen unable to respond.

Leclerc is 10.8s ahead of Sainz with 12s to go in the lead of the race. Sainz has a 5s advantage over Piastri with much fresher tyres in third. How will this all play out?

Having lost the on-track battle with Norris, Verstappen duly comes into the pits for a set of mediums and drops behind Hamilton into sixth.

As the laps tick by, it looks increasingly likely that Ferrari is going to try and make it to the end with Leclerc. Sainz could play a decisive role in helping his team-mate if he can hold off the advances of Piastri, who was 1.5s quicker last time by.

Stroll is the latest driver to skate across Turn 2, but he has made a move on Zhou stick for P15. Russell moves past Magnussen for P7.

Piastri will soon have DRS on Sainz, but every lap the Spaniard could hold him back could be crucial. This is turning into a real nail-biter.

Piastri looked like he had the job done by building that gap over Norris earlier on, but Ferrari could pull off a tactical masterstroke here if the Australian can't get a wiggle on and clear Sainz. The Spaniard looked like he was saving tyres earlier on as he never sought to use his offset against Leclerc to his benefit, so may have a bit more in the tank than we assume.

"My front left is nearly gone, but I guess we try," says Sainz. And on lap 45, Piastri moves ahead on the run to Ascari - not an overtake we see very often.

Leclerc has 11s in hand on Piastri. How much tyre life has Leclerc got in the tank?

Norris will soon make his presence felt against Sainz too. He's into DRS range and now hassling the Spaniard for third.
