Weekend review and results round-up
Formula 1 2011 raised the bar yet again with the Canadian Grand Prix - and this time DRS and Pirelli did not play that great a role, as Jenson Button's remarkable double-comeback-charge victory was achieved largely through some beautiful driving in tricky conditions and well-timed tyre changes
His team-mate Lewis Hamilton could only watch from the sidelines after an early clash between the two McLarens, one of several incidents in Hamilton's short race, which will surely prolong the debate over his style.
Until Sunday's crazy race, the big talking points had been the sudden reappearance of Pedro de la Rosa as a short-notice stand-in for Sergio Perez, and the final disappearance of the 2011 Bahrain GP, as that saga appeared to finally reach a conclusion that will see India back where it was, Bahrain written off for 2011, and the season conclude in November after all.
The Le Mans 24 Hours delivered just as much excitement as the Canadian GP, with Audi pulling off a narrow victory with its remaining car after its other two contenders suffered ferocious accidents, from which drivers Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller thankfully emerged unscathed.
MotoGP had a wet race at Silverstone too, where Casey Stoner took charge of the title battle by dominating while Jorge Lorenzo crashed out.
In America, IndyCar tried something different with a double-header at Texas, which saw Will Power finally claim his first oval win in the random grid race two after title rival Dario Franchitti had triumphed in the opener, while in NASCAR Pocono delivered Jeff Gordon's second victory of 2011.
