Weekend review and results round-up
Marco Simoncelli's death in MotoGP's Malaysian Grand Prix last weekend resonated far beyond the motorcycle racing world, such was the impression that the spectacular rising Italian star had made on the whole spectrum of motorised sport
The Sepang race was immediately abandoned after the crash, in which Simoncelli fell and slid into the path of oncoming riders, resulting in injuries that would claim his life.
As tributes poured in, racing continued elsewhere. Sebastien Loeb ended a run of frustrations by winning the Rally of Spain, giving him the edge in what is now a two-man World Rally Championship title race against Mikko Hirvonen heading for the Wales finale.
The V8 Supercars points lead changed hands again in the Surfers Paradise international guest event, where Sebastien Bourdais helped Jamie Whincup to a race one win that put him back ahead of Triple Eight team-mate Craig Lowndes in the standings.
Other tin-top series saw drivers outside the title fight taking the wins, as Alain Menu and Tom Coronel grabbed World Touring Car victories at Suzuka - and Rob Huff edged a little closer to Yvan Muller in the points - and Clint Bowyer narrowly beat Jeff Burton to the honour of Richard Childress Racing's 100th NASCAR Sprint Cup win at Talladega. Carl Edwards remains at the head of the standings in that contest.
