Haas F1 team to try different brake supplier in Russian GP practice

The Haas Formula 1 team will start the Russian Grand Prix weekend with Carbon Industrie brakes, rather than its regular Brembo parts, following a successful test in Bahrain last week

Haas has battled braking problems since it entered F1 last year, and tried Carbon Industrie during last November's Brazilian GP weekend but has always raced with Brembo.

Having tested the alternate supplier again in Bahrain, it will evaluate them further during practice at Sochi on Friday.

"At the moment we have all options open to us," team principal Gunther Steiner told Autosport.

"We need to see how we do in FP1, and then we'll see what we'll do for the rest.

"Hopefully we can stay on them, because in testing they were performing well.

"The drivers were happy with them, and they were consistent, that's the main thing.

"We want to get to the point where brakes are no issue any more."

Romain Grosjean suggested earlier this year that a switch away from Brembo would be the only option for Haas, and was encouraged by what he found on the opening day of the Bahrain test.

"We still have a lot of work to do around them and see the performance, but it feels better, as it was last year," he said at the end of the day's running.

"Otherwise it's quite similar. We just need to see if we can actually make it work with all our mapping.

"We've collected a lot of data and I think the guys are going to be working on that."

New team-mate Kevin Magnussen took over for the second day, and based on what he found said he was happy with the switch.

"We'll continue with what we tried in the Bahrain test and see how it goes," said the Dane.

"It's always good to try different things, and we felt that there were some positives with the CI brakes, and we'll continue like that.

"We can always go back."
