Why great F1 racing in 2017 would be a fluke
There are plenty of predictions that Formula 1's 2017 revamp is going to make the racing less exciting. But even if things are entertaining this year, it would be wrong to hail that as a direct consequence of the changes
Correlation does not equal causation. If the 2017 Formula 1 season happens to be a classic, be very cautious about concluding the new regulations are therefore a triumph.
If the Australian Grand Prix is a thriller, the 'success' of the new rules will be the talk of Melbourne. But it would be folly for F1 to mistake dumb luck for clever design.
