Rio Haryanto takes last-gasp GP3 win at wet Hungaroring
Rio Haryanto capitalised on a late race safety car to steal victory from Nigel Melker in the second GP3 race of the weekend at the Hungaroring
Manor driver Haryanto had charged from ninth on the grid to second by lap eight in the wet conditions, by which time pole-sitter Melker was a long way down the road.
The RSC Mucke man had his lead up to 7.9 seconds when the safety car came out on lap 12, after Thomas Hylkema crashed coming out of Turn 2.
Haryanto attacked Melker going into the final corner on the restart, and he then made his move for the lead stick at Turn 2. From there Melker was shuffled down to fourth by the ART duo of Valtteri Bottas and James Calado.
Bottas had gradually picked his way through the field from eighth to further extend the championship lead he inherited yesterday. But Calado was the real star of the race, charging to a podium finish from 25th on the grid in the wet conditions.
Behind Melker, Jenzer's Nico Muller completed the top five, while front row starter Tom Dillmann (Addax) clung to sixth after cutting the chicane on the final lap while fighting with Status driver Antonio Felix da Costa.
