Prema sign Colombian Leal for 2009

Prema Powerteam have announced 18-year-old Colombian Omar Julian Leal as the first signing for their 2009 Formula Renault 3.5 campaign

Leal has competed in Euroseries 3000 with Durango over the past two seasons, lifting this year's Italian 3000 crown.

The agreement follows what was deemed a satisfactory two days of testing at Valencia on November 26-27, where Leal finished 22nd fastest of the 27 drivers present.

"I know I'll have the chance to race supported by an extremely capable team," said Leal. "Since making my first test, I also realised that the 2009 season will be another competitive one. I really felt good with all of the staff, starting with the technical department, but I know I'll have to work hard to fight for the top spots and reward the team's expectations."

Team principle Angel Rosin commented: "It is always a pleasure to work with talented young drivers who are eager to improve together with the team. I had the chance to see Leal on-track at Valencia, he has great all-round preparation and also showed to be in great physical shape."

A decision on a second driver is expected in the coming weeks. The team have previously stated their desire to retain 2008 race winner Miguel Molina.
