Drivers hold silence for Madrid victims

Formula One drivers and leading figures held a three-minute silence in Valencia on Friday as a tribute to the victims of the Madrid plane crash

Former world champion Fernando Alonso had said on Thursday that he hoped other drivers would join in a special tribute. The event took place at midday, shortly after the conclusion of opening free practice.

Alonso was joined by fellow F1 drivers, plus Valencia officials and leading figures from the sport - including Bernie Ecclestone, McLaren boss Ron Dennis and Williams chief Frank Williams as silence fell over the port area of the track.

GP2 organisers delayed the start of their practice session to allow for the tribute.

Speaking on Thursday, Alonso had said that the Madrid crash had cast a shadow over his second home grand prix.

"It will definitely change the weekend for me, because it's a tragedy what happened," he said. "All the Spanish people are in shock and I am too. It's probably the saddest approach to a weekend I have had."
