Boardman to make WTCC debut
Former British Touring Car privateer Tom Boardman will make his World Touring Car Championship debut at Estoril next month
The 24-year-old will drive a second SEAT Leon TFSI for the SUNRED Engineering team, alongside regular driver Tom Coronel on July 12-13, as a prize for finishing as the top points scorer in the SEAT Leon Eurocup at Pau last weekend. He finished first and fourth in the two WTCC-supporting events.
"Winning this prize was the main reason I did the Eurocup," said Boardman. "It's a great opportunity for me to show what I can do at this level.
"I know Estoril well from racing in the Spanish SEAT championship, which will help, although it's a challenging circuit."
Boardman is hoping to use the one-off appearance as a stepping stone to a full-time drive in the WTCC next season, either with an existing team or fielding a car with his family-run Triple R team.
"Ideally, it would be good to have an offer to drive for one of the top teams," he added. "But I know that if we had the right sort of budget we could do a very good job running in the WTCC."
