Massa leads practice 3 - Hungary

Felipe Massa moved to the head of the field in the final practice session before qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix

After lagging behind title rivals McLaren on Friday, Ferrari were much more competitive this morning, with Massa beating Fernando Alonso by 0.231 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton took third, with BMW's Nick Heidfeld intruding on the usual lead quartet in fourth and pushing Raikkonen down to fifth.

Hamilton had been fastest of the frontrunners after the first flying laps, his 1:20.764 beating Raikkonen by 0.098 seconds despite running wide at Turn 11 during his run.

Alonso then hit the top when the top drivers rejoined for another attempt 20 minutes later. The world champion improved to a 1:20.414, with Hamilton briefly joining him in a McLaren one-two.

Massa had initially struggled to put a full lap together, and was eight tenths behind his championship rivals. But with 15 minutes to go he showed his true potential with the 1:20.183 that would stand as the best of Hungaroring practice.

None of the leaders then improved when they tried super-soft tyres at the very end of the session. Both McLarens set new fastest sector times in the first part of the lap, but then lost time in the middle section as the tyres struggled to perform for a full lap.

Behind the Ferraris, McLarens and Heidfeld, Williams' Nico Rosberg continued his promising practice form with sixth place.

Toyota had maintained their practice of taking to the track earlier than most, and managed to hold on to seventh and eighth even after the rest of the frontrunners joined the fray.

Red Bull's Mark Webber and Wurz's Williams completed the top ten.

Last year's Hungaroring winner Jenson Button could only manage 18th as Honda's troubles continued.
