Hamilton believes pole was possible

Lewis Hamilton believes he had a car capable of taking pole position for the French Grand Prix, but was not too disheartened about a mistake he made that cost him a chance of the top spot

The McLaren driver missed out on his third consecutive pole position by seven hundredths of a second, to provide some consolation for his team after Fernando Alonso was forced out with gearbox problems.

Speaking after the session Hamilton said that he was still confident for his chances tomorrow.

"I think you cannot be perfect all the time but the team has done a fantastic job," said Hamilton, referring to Alonso's problem. "The car was pretty sweet for the qualifying session.

"I had the car to be on pole but I lost a bit of time at Turn 15. I was 0.15 up, I had it there, but it would have been a mega lap. I lost a bit of time but that is the way the game goes.

"I am very, very happy. We are front row and I believe we have a good strategy for tomorrow, so we will be very strong."
