Allmendinger to enter Atlanta race

AJ Allmendinger's move to the NASCAR Nextel Cup has been confirmed by Team Red Bull, and he will already compete this weekend at Atlanta

The Champ Car race winner will also race this year at Texas, driving a Dodge Charger for the team.

Former champion Bill Elliot was scheduled to drive the car but has stepped aside to allow Allmendinger the opportunity to make his debut this year.

Next year, Allmendinger will drive one of the new Toyota Camrys for the team, where he will partner Brian Vickers.

"I'm really excited about this next challenge in my racing career," said Allmendinger. "I know this is going to be a lot of work in the upcoming months, but I couldn't be happier to do it with Team Red Bull."

The 24-year-old competed in two Craftsman Truck events earlier this year with Bill Davis Racing, and his crew chief from those races, Rick Viers, will join him at Team Red Bull.

Viers said: "I see a huge amount of potential in AJ. For the first half of next year, he must use his patience to learn as much as he can and hopefully, he'll be a solid rookie of the year candidate by year's end."
