Fisichella to get engine boost for Brazil
Giancarlo Fisichella will get exclusive use of Renault's latest E-specification engine at this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix as the team bid to wrap up both titles
After evaluating their strategy for the Interlagos event, Renault have decided to put their two drivers on different specifications of engines because of the tight championship situation.
It means that Fisichella will get the new E-spec engine, which is a one-race engine that has components suitable for a shorter life cycle. The engine has passed all the team's reliability approval tests and they do not believe it is a gamble to race with the unit.
However, with Alonso needing just one point to secure the drivers' crown and in light of Michael Schumacher's engine failure in Japan, the team have decided to run him with the latest version of their D-specification - the D5.
This is the normal two-race engine, upgraded from the version used in China and Japan, that will simply be run over one weekend. That should give the team enough of a reliability cushion to be fully confident it will last the entire weekend.
Despite splitting their strategy on the engine front, Renault are adamant that they will approach this weekend like any other - and aim for the victory
Technical director Bob Bell said: "The most important thing will be to change nothing, and to not feel pressured to do so. We go to every race weekend aiming to win, and we will approach Brazil in the same way. We want to do our normal job, and take nothing for granted.
"We will race hard and react accordingly should the circumstances of the race demand it. There are many mathematical scenarios that could see us win or lose, but for the team, it will be business as usual. I think we have always believed that the best to win championships is by winning races."
