Charles Leclerc gets Ferrari F1 test chance after impressing Haas

Charles Leclerc is set to drive for Ferrari on the opening day of the post-British Grand Prix Formula 1 test at Silverstone, Autosport has learned

The Ferrari junior driver is believed to have impressed the Italian outfit with his performance when he made his race weekend debut for Haas in British GP practice on Friday, finishing 18th quickest.

It will be the first time the 18-year-old GP3 championship leader has driven a current-spec Ferrari, having completed the required mileage to obtain a 'Friday licence' in a 2014 Ferrari in May.

Leclerc, who is also pencilled in to drive in first practice for Haas in Hungary, Germany, Malaysia and Abu Dhabi, will hand the car over to Kimi Raikkonen for day two of the test on Wednesday.

Renault development driver Sergey Sirotkin will follow up his Friday practice appearance in Russia with a full day in the car on Tuesday before stepping aside for Jolyon Palmer.

McLaren will run Fernando Alonso on Tuesday, before reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne takes over for day two.

Rio Haryanto will drive the opening day for Manor, with development driver Jordan King getting his second full test day of the year on Wednesday.

Williams has yet to decide on its complete driver line-up, but Valtteri Bottas is expected to do one of the days.

Red Bull will run GP2 star Pierre Gasly on both days, Force India will run teenage Russian Formula 3 driver Nikita Mazepin, American GP3 racer Santino Ferrucci will drive the Haas and Toro Rosso will split running between Carlos Sainz Jr and F3 frontrunner Sergio Sette Camara.

Champion team Mercedes is putting Esteban Ocon in its 2016 car for both days, while Manor racer Pascal Wehrlein drives the '14 Mercedes to conduct development work for Pirelli.

Sauber is skipping the second test, as it did earlier this for the first one at Barcelona, on the grounds of "cost effectiveness" as the car's new aero package is to be introduced at a later stage.
