Monaco Grand Prix: Kvyat penalised for Magnussen F1 clash

Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat has been given a three-place grid penalty for the Canadian Grand Prix for colliding with Kevin Magnussen's Renault in Monaco

Kvyat was trying to unlap himself at the time after an electrical problem forced him to pit during the early safety car laps.

The Russian and the Dane initially made contact through the Swimming Pool complex before a second tangle at Rascasse sent them into the barriers.

The stewards ruled: "The driver of car #26 [Kvyat] with two small collisions effectively created an overtaking space which in reality would not have been there if the collision had not occurred."

Kvyat felt Magnussen should have been given him space in the incident.

"He blocked me twice very strongly two corners before," he argued.

"At the next corner I tried to go on the inside again and he just blocked me completely.

"I couldn't go through the wall so I had to go through him.

"I had a couple of moves in that corner two laps before.

"When you find a driver who really doesn't want to let you by, a crash happens."

The Toro Rosso retired following the crash, with Magnussen eventually doing likewise after a solo incident at Mirabeau later in the race.

Kvyat was already extremely frustrated about the electrical problem that left his car stuck in 'constant speed' mode while being the safety car at the start.

"We've thrown away another opportunity," he said. "We need to be better organised with these things.

"We cannot just be stuck in 60km/h to start the race.

"It's a really bad feeling to be helpless with this electronic issue. It's very painful when you lose the race before it starts.

"We have to be strong because the car has very big potential, but these small things kill our potential."
