James Thompson handed second WTCC outing with Munnich Motorsport

James Thompson will once again race for the Munnich Motorsport World Touring Car Championship team next month, standing in for team owner and driver Rene Munnich in Marrakech

The Briton was called up by the squad for the second round of the season at the Slovakia Ring earlier this month, with World Rallycross commitments forcing Munnich out of the meeting.

Thompson felt a red flag in qualifying had wrecked his chances of securing a higher grid slot than his 14th place, but he showed competitively during the two races and just missed out on the final point in the second race by 0.7 seconds in what was his first competitive outing in almost a year.

The two-time British Touring Car champion told Autosport afterwards he would be keen to explore further options with the squad, although he acknowledged there were plenty of factors to be considered before any extra outings could be agreed.

But on Tuesday - his 42nd birthday - the team confirmed Thompson would return to the cockpit for the Moroccan event on the redesigned Marrakech street circuit, which takes place next weekend.

"James did well in Slovakia for what was his first race in 12 months, his first race with our team and his first time in the Chevrolet," said Munnich Motorsport team manager Dominik Greiner.

"He was P5 in second practice and was really unlucky not to progress further in qualifying.

"With Rene facing another calendar clash it made perfect sense to give James another chance.

"Although the objective will be to bring the car back in one piece on what is partly a street circuit, he will be able to drive directly on full power because he knows the potential of the car now."
