Audi's Jamie Green: Only DTM title matters now

Jamie Green says his DTM championship position matters little to him if he does not win the title, as he prioritises turning his pace into a first victory for Audi

The Brit left Mercedes after finishing third in the 2012 standings, ending an eight-season tenure during which he won eight races and did not finish lower than seventh in the championship.

By contrast, his first two seasons with Audi have yielded 11th and 10th in the standings and three podiums.

Last year, Green was the DTM's second-best average qualifier, and had impressive race pace only for results to go begging through ill-timed safety cars - notably while leading at Oschersleben and Hockenheim's finale - and mistakes.

"From my point of view it doesn't really make any difference whether I finish third in the championship or 10th," he told AUTOSPORT.

"I've already finished third, I've won races, had pole positions and podiums, so the only thing that's missing, really, is to win the championship. That's what I'm aiming for.

"There were scenarios, especially last year, where I didn't get what I deserved in some of the races. So I think that's kind of irrelevant, whether you're fifth or 10th.

"The main thing that I think of is performance and last year I was one of the quickest guys on a few occasions, and that gives me a realistic hope of being able to win.

"So I just want to firstly win my first race with Audi and secondly be consistent.

"If that happens, that could lead to being the champion."

MITCHELL ADAM: Why the DTM's revamp should succeed

After topping the first day of pre-season testing at Estoril, Green was eighth on each of his two days at Oschersleben earlier this month.

"The car, to me, has felt pretty good, so I'm fairly confident we've got a decent car," he said before his 11th DTM campaign.

"Obviously development in most areas isn't allowed, so it's more about optimising what we've got and I think we've done that over winter.

"We've squeezed a bit more out of the car. It won the last two races last year, so it's capable of doing it."
