Nicholas Latifi gets Tech 1 Formula Renault 3.5 outings

Tech 1 Racing has signed Nicholas Latifi for the next two rounds of the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 championship at the Hungaroring and Paul Ricard

The 19-year-old Canadian will race alongside Lotus Formula 1 reserve driver Marco Sorensen, becoming the second rookie at Tech 1 this season after Alfonso Celis Jr made his debut at the Nurburgring in July.

"We're delighted to welcome Nicholas to our team," said Tech 1 team manager Simon Abadie.

"He won't have much time to find his feet in the car and get used to the DRS, starting procedures and pitstops, but we've got every confidence in his ability to learn quickly.

"He'll take advantage of every second to gain experience."

Latifi will continue his full-time European Formula 3 campaign alongside his FR3.5 duties. He currently lies 10th in the F3 championship with Prema, with his best result being a podium finish during the opening weekend at Silverstone.

Tech 1 has experienced a difficult season in FR3.5 and the four-time champion outfit currently sits 11th in the teams' standings after fielding a single car for the first five rounds of the year.

Jules Bianchi scored its last victory back in 2012, while Sorensen's best performance this year came in Monaco in May where he finished second.

Tech 1 has yet to announce a second driver for the final round at Jerez, which clashes with the European F3 finale at Hockenheim.

Latifi will also make a one-off appearance in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB race on the British Touring Car Championship bill at Rockingham this weekend, which he said was a way of filling the long gap in the F3 calendar between the Nurburgring in August and October's Imola event.

"It's always good to try new things," Latifi told AUTOSPORT.
