Toomas Heikkinen joins Marklund for 2014 World Rallycross

Double X-Games gold medalist Toomas 'Topi' Heikkinen will lead Swedish team Marklund Motorsport in the 2014 FIA World Rallycross Championship

The Finn will drive one of two brand new VW Polo Supercars in the new-for-2014 team championship, partnered by Swede Anton Marklund.

"After a successful year winning the 2013 GRC [Global RallyCross Championship] my goal now is to win the new World Rallycross Championship with Marklund Motorsport, and nothing less," said Heikkinen.

"I'm confident that together we can develop a winning car and team."

Heikkinen, who dominated the GRC in 2013, contested his home event of the European Rallycross Championship last season, qualifying second in the intermediate classification.

Marklund Motorsport team principal Jan Marklund admitted he was impressed by Heikkinen.

"Signing Topi shows the sort of progress that Marklund Motorsport is making going into the new season," said Marklund.

"His results last year speak for themselves and we are incredibly happy to have a champion leading our driver line-up. It's a very exciting period in our project and shows the hard work and planning that we have put in is really paying off."

Marklund ran his son Anton in the European Championship last season, finishing seventh overall. Mattias Ekstrom also drove for the team at Holjes, Sweden, finishing second.
