Super Touring series joins BTCC bill for 2014 season

Super Touring cars will return to the British Touring Car Championship bill this season

The advanced two-litre machines that ran in the BTCC between 1991 and 2000 will have two historic races supporting the current NGTC contenders at Oulton Park on June 7-8.

The Historic Sports Car Club-run Super Touring Trophy was launched in 2013 for tin-tops of the 1970-2000 era and four events had already been announced for 2014.

A fifth has now been added at Oulton and the plan is for two races to be run, of around 20 minutes duration, with one televised on ITV4.

Series founder Jonny Westbrook told AUTOSPORT: "The fanbase in the BTCC now has its roots in the Super Touring era [1991-2000]. It's incredible we've got the opportunity to be able to race in front of them again.

"It's on the long circuit, which is great in Super Touring terms because there were some superb races there back in the day."

Former BTCC champion Tim Harvey, who appeared in the series last year in a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, is hoping to contest the event.

"If there was a car I would do it," he told AUTOSPORT. "I really want to be in that race.

"I do know people with cars, but I expect they will want to race at that event themselves! There's a good chance [I'll do it]."

As well as the Nissan Primeras and Honda Accords that ran at the front in 2013, the field this season is expected to include two Williams-built Renault Lagunas and a number of BMWs, including the ex-Alain Menu 1992 Prodrive machine.
