Lewis Hamilton ready to work like a rookie again after 'average' year

Lewis Hamilton is ready to knuckle down like he is a Formula 1 rookie again as he prepares for 2014 with Mercedes

On the back of a campaign where he feels he did not deliver to his best, Hamilton wants to start afresh to ensure he makes the most of opportunities next year.

"I need to be working with the engineers in the factory, and I feel like I am going to have a winter like in 2006 going to 2007," he said.

"This year has been an average year in terms of my performance, so I need to work hard and get myself to the point where I can feel I can do more."

Prior to his rookie campaign with McLaren in 2007, Hamilton was put through an intensive learning process to make sure that he was ready for the challenges of Formula 1.

The efforts paid off with Hamilton challenging experienced team-mate Fernando Alonso for the world championship and only missing out on the crown to Kimi Raikkonen at the final round.

With F1 facing its most dramatic rules change for years in 2014, Hamilton knows that getting the most out of the cars will be much more difficult.

"Next year is different," he said. "We have to manage the braking, manage the KERS, manage the fuel, and then the tyres are going to be something else too.

"They are an unknown at the moment. Even though we are on the simulator, we don't have a tyre model for next year so it is difficult to know if the driving style is that much different."
