Tony Stewart supports Kurt Busch's Indianapolis 500 plans

Kurt Busch's new NASCAR employer Stewart-Haas will not stand in the way of his intention to contest the 2014 Indianapolis 500

Busch has been keen to enter IndyCar's premier race since he tested for Andretti Autosport earlier this year.

He is also working on contesting this year's season finale at Fontana in preparation.

Stewart-Haas co-owner Tony Stewart rose to prominence in what was then the Indy Racing League in 1996, winning the championship in 1997 before moving to NASCAR.

He contested five Indy 500s in total, last appearing with Ganassi in 2001.

Busch said Stewart had not only approved his IndyCar plans, but promised to come and support him.

"I mentioned that to Tony when we got together," said Busch. "He said, 'man, if you're going to run Fontana this year, I'm rolling with you and I'm going to be there with you'."

The Fontana IndyCar race takes place one day before the Talladega NASCAR Sprint Cup round, while the Indy 500 and NASCAR's 600-mile race at Charlotte traditionally share the same weekend in May.

Busch said he was still progressing on a deal with Andretti, but did not want to be distracted from his current NASCAR programme with the Furniture Row team.

"It's something that's still on the table," said the 2004 Cup champion. "There are certain timelines that I've agreed to with Michael Andretti if we're still going to do the deal. We're working on things.

"There's still the concern of running extra-curricular races. But right now the focus is obviously on these next two weeks and getting the #78 car in the Chase.

"We'll see what opportunities lie ahead. Everything has to be the right situation for it to happen."
