DAMS plays down GP2 leader Davide Valsecchi's recent lack of wins
DAMS team boss Jean Paul Driot believes his squad has not lost any of its early season form despite failing to add to its victory tally in the past two GP2 events
Davide Valsecchi won three of the opening five races to jump into a dominant position in the championship, getting DAMS off to a great start in its bid to repeat its 2011 title success with Romain Grosjean.
The Italian has not won a race since the championship moved to Europe, but he has scored well enough in Spain and Monaco to extend his championship lead over Luiz Razia to 31 points. And Driot believes that the team's consistency is proof of its title credentials.
"Although we didn't finish on the podium in Monaco, it's not all negative," said Driot. "The car was quick, our pitstops were good and the team did a great job.
"I'd like to congratulate the team and reassure them if necessary. The fact that we've won a lot over the past few weekends could make this seem a bit disappointing.
"But the opposition is tough and it's during races like these that you win titles."
Valsecchi retired from race two in Monaco after getting caught up in a first-lap crash, but the Italian shrugged off the disappointment of his second retirement of the season.
"In the sprint race, by fluffing my start I put myself in the position of being caught up in a collision and that's what happened," he said. "Despite this, the positive aspect is that I'm still in the lead of the championship."
