Alex Lynn fastest in British Formula 3 practice again at Monza

Alex Lynn topped free testing times in the British Formula 3 International Series for the second Friday running by going fastest at Monza

The British teenager, the reigning Formula Renault UK champion, headed Pipo Derani and Hannes van Asseldonk as Fortec Motorsport's Dallara-Mercedes took a clean sweep of the fastest three times.

Just as at Oulton Park last week, the Fortec cars are setting invincible speed-trap figures - which in Monza's case means they are likely running even less rear wing than the opposition to suit the circuit's long straights.

"I didn't feel great," said a surprised Lynn. "I didn't think we were quickest but we must have been all right. It's a different thing getting used to the low downforce - our wing settings are so low it's like being back in Formula Renault spec for me! I think the racing's going to be mega, as long as it doesn't rain."

Derani, buoyed by his reversed-grid Oulton success, was driving with visibly more confidence, while van Asseldonk was pleased considering that this was his first time at Monza in an F3 car - although the Dutchman has raced at the Italian track in Formula Abarth and BMW (Lynn's first F3 test was at Monza, while Derani contested this event last year).

Despite a niggling misfire that he could not shake off, Jazeman Jaafar headed the five-strong Carlin team, whose Dallara-Volkswagens filled positions four to eight in the times. Among them was Carlos Sainz Jr, who was fastest in the wet morning session.

Nick McBride's Nissan-powered T-Sport Dallara got close to the Carlin quintet, with Oulton main-race victor Felix Serralles rounding out the top in the fourth of the Fortec machines.
