Houston round confirmed for 2013 IndyCar season
IndyCar has confirmed that it will add a street race in Houston to its 2013 schedule
The event will be run in the car parks adjacent to Reliant Park, home of the Houston Texans NFL team and site of the Champ Car races in 2006 and 2007, in the first week of October next year.
Mike Lanigan, who formerly promoted Champ Car races in Houston and Cleveland, will serve as chairman and CEO of the event.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said that he was confident that Houston had the potential to become one of the series' hallmark events.
"There is so much energy here in this market; we feel like we can really capitalise and make this one of the premier events on the circuit," Bernard said. "We're an American-based racing body, and I think we have a lot of momentum building. Our job is to create big events, and we feel like this can be one of our big events."
The circuit's rough surface was criticised by drivers during the Champ Car era, but Penske's Helio Castroneves said the he was optimistic that things would be improved for the track's return.
"We have a long way to go," he said. "Maybe the city can help, and we can find lines that can be suitable for the cars. Even with that, they were still able to bring it back here. I'm sure we're going to have a great time."
