Chevrolet welcomes Ford rivalry in the WTCC

Chevrolet Europe motorsport boss Eric Neve has welcomed the chance for his firm to extend its rivalry with Ford into the World Touring Car Championship

Ford is coming into the WTCC with Arena Motorsport this year. The former British Touring Car team will run Focus S2000 TCs for Tom Chilton and James Nash. Reigning champion team Chevrolet is again fielding Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alain Menu.

Chevrolet and Ford are long-time NASCAR rivals, and the arrival of the latter in the WTCC also coincides with the series' American debut at Sears Point in September.

"We are definitely thrilled about the debut of Ford, our traditional rival in US racing, and it's great to see the WTCC becoming more global year after year," said Neve.

"Going to the US later in the year for the first-ever WTCC event in our brand's home country is going to be very exciting."

Despite Ford's arrival, greater works involvement from SEAT and the prospect of Lada and Honda returning, the factory Chevrolets are still expected to be very tough to beat this season. But Neve said his squad would take nothing for granted.

"From the outside, it could appear that Chevrolet is favourite to win the titles," he said.

"However, to stay in the front of the pack for three consecutive years is always a challenge, in any sport. We are approaching 2012 with humility, but also with great determination. To see the competition progressing puts pressure on us, but is also very stimulating."
