Disaster for Dario

Dario Franchitti's miserable CART season took another turn for the worse as the Scot crashed out before the green flag at Nazareth

Franchitti, starting 14th in his Team KOOL Green Reynard-Honda, spun into the inside wall as he tried to get a good run out of turn four on the way down to the start. The impact, although apparently minor, damaged the rear wing and gearbox.

"I think it was just cold tyres," he said. "I gave it a bit more power and it just swapped ends on me."

Franchitti went into this season as title favourite after only losing the championship to Juan Montoya on a tie-break in 1999. His pre-season programme was wrecked by a testing crash at Homestead that left him with pelvis and head injuries, but he returned in time for the season opener only to off the pace in the initial races. He had hoped that a second place finish at Motegi a fortnight ago would mark a change in his luck.
