Pit stop champions
The Pennzoil Panther Racing team won Sunday's Coor's Indy 500 Pit Stop Competition at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was part of Thursday's Carburetion Day
Panther and its driver, Scott Goodyear, won the finals by defeating Treadway Racing and Robby McGehee. Panther performed a pit stop in 11.19 seconds to Treadway's 12.72.
"Kevin Blanch is great," said John Barnes, the team co-owner referring to his chief mechanic. "He has worked hard every day to be a better Kevin. We've got a great group of people. Kevin shows he really works hard.
"Only one time have we come into the pits and not gained a position this season."
Blanch participates on a workout program with a physical trainer, along with the remainder of his crew at Panther Racing.
"It gives you stamina," Blanch said. "After five stops, it wears you out. I won't say it's not easy, but it makes you more focused doing stop after stop after stop."
Goodyear believes he had the easy part of driving the car to the pit stop line in head-to-head competition.
"Going 500 miles, you have to be there to win," Goodyear said. "And having three pit stops is so important, especially down to the last pit stop. We have five today in the competition and made no mistakes. They practised, they train and look forward to it every year."
