Formula 2 series boss Jonathan Palmer defends single-seater ladder
Formula 2 series boss Jonathan Palmer has defended the number of junior single-seater championships that are running below Formula 1 at the moment
Palmer brought the F2 name back to the international racing ladder as a one-make series in 2009. Other new championships have launched since then, prompting claims that there are now too many series diluting the market.
"People say there are too many championships, and to an extent you can look from the outside and say that there are," Palmer said on the main stage at this year's AUTOSPORT International.
"But it's not viable to control them. It's being anti-competitive to say to someone that they can't exist. You have to let the market forces decide which championships thrive and which don't."
FIA president Jean Todt has expressed a desire to simplify the junior single-seater ladder, but Palmer does not expect the governing body to make radical changes to the number of championships.
"There is some merit in having different championships," he added. "If you just have three championships they would probably be more expensive because the drivers would be constrained into doing those championships.
"I think we will see the FIA try to work on mechanisms to channel drivers into a more conventional route."
