Richie Stanaway tops first day of Formula Renault 3.5 testing at Aragon

Richie Stanaway, Gravity Charouz, Aragon Formula Renault 3.5 testingRichie Stanaway topped the opening day of Formula Renault 3.5 testing at Aragon in Spain, the New Zealander going quickest in the morning and afternoon sessions for the Gravity-Charouz Racing team.

Stanaway, who won the German Formula 3 title this year, was one of 24 drivers invited to take part in the morning test by Renault Sport Technologies as prizes, and lapped in a pace-setting 1m43.594s as the track gradually dried after a damp start.

He then improved his pace by over 0.4s during the afternoon to wind up on a benchmark time of 1m43.191s, 0.122s faster than Formula Renault Eurocup graduate Danil Kvyat, who was driving for P1 Motorsport.

Daniel Zampieri was third quickest for BVM Target while Robin Frijns, second in the morning session, fell to fourth in the afternoon in his Comtec entry.

Carlos Sainz Jr, who will compete in British F3 next year with Carlin, was fifth quickest for the team, ahead of Marco Sorenson (Gravity-Charouz), Will Stevens (Tech 1) and Carlos Huertas (Fortec).

GP3 racer Nico Muller was ninth quickest for Comtec, while Japanese F3 champion Yuhi Sekiguchi rounded out the top 10 for BVM Target.
