Herbert: 'I have to start beating Eddie'

Johnny Herbert has admitted he has little chance of staying in Formula One unless his fortunes change this season.

As he celebrates his 150th Grand Prix on Sunday at the Nurburgring, scene of his last win, he said he has, at the very least, to beat team-mate Eddie Irvine to keep his career alive.

Today his luck was not much better than usual as he and Irvine sat 16th and 17th on the grid. But he said Jaguar's chances of reaching for their potential - and even dreaming of a repeat of last year's performance - will not happen until the team overcomes its clutch problems.

"To have any chance of staying things have to get better for me. If they do not that will be it," said Herbert. "I have to start beating Eddie. That is all I can look to at the moment.

"When I do that, maybe I can start looking at the bigger picture. I do not feel I personally could have done more this season. The car would not have allowed it.

"The clutch is the main problem. Things have improved but we will not know how much until the weekend unfolds.

"It has not mattered how far up the grid we have been because as soon as the lights come on five cars immediately flash past."

"I would like to stay here in F1 with Jaguar, but things have to improve for me to have a chance. No disrespect - but I won't go to Minardi."
