Burns takes Argentina victory

Richard Burns extended his lead in the World Rally Championship with a crushing victory in Argentina, the Oxford driver doubling his lead over Marcus Gronholm on the final stage

Gronholm's second place was in doubt after he was hauled in front of stewards to explain why he opened his Peugeot's bonnet in a refuelling zone. However, no further action has been taken against the Finn and his second place stands.

Burns now goes to the Acropolis Rally with a championship lead that can not be overtaken until at least New Zealand in July. "We know we've got a good package and an apparent advantage," admitted Burns after the event. "However we also know that everyone is working hard to reduce
our lead and so we must grab hold of what we've got and not let go."

Argentina saw mixed fortunes for the McRae brothers. Colin retired from third place on the first stage of the final day when his engine expired because of a broken oil pump belt. Younger brother Alister, however,
finished a provisional seventh to record Hyundai's first championship points with its relatively undeveloped Accent WRC challenger.
