Mat Jackson tops second practice at Silverstone
Mat Jackson topped the second British Touring Car free practice session at Silverstone this afternoon
Honda Racing duo and title rivals Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal exchanged fastest times early on before Jackson went round in 59.700s.
The Special Tuning Racing SEAT Leons were the first to go for quick times in the final 15 minutes, Dave Newsham going fastest with 59.635s.
Motorbase Ford Focus driver Jackson went for another run in the final moments, going quickest with 59.627s. That compares favourably to Tom Onslow-Cole's 2010 pole time of 59.659s.
The Honda Civics also went for times in the closing stages, Shedden taking third from Neal by less than a hundredth of a second.
Tom Chilton, Andy Neate, and Onslow-Cole were sixth, seventh and ninth respectively in their Arena Fords, making it four Mountune-engined Focuses in the top nine.
Title outsider James Nash was eighth in his Triple Eight Vauxhall Vectra, while team-mate Ollie Jackson was 10th on his second BTCC weekend.
Returning former champion James Thompson was 15th in his Motorbse Focus, setting a time of 60.399s with his 45kg of ballast as a late championship entry.
Many drivers were shown warning flags for not respecting the track limits at Copse, which could result in disallowed times if they persist in this afternoon's qualifying session.
