Jaguar determined to find boost
After the F1 circus spent the majority of last week in Spain, Jaguar have returned there to test at Jerez ahead of the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Tuesday, however was pretty much ruined by the weather
Jaguar Racing are desperate to find the key to unlocking the latent performance of the Jaguar R1, after a disappointing Spanish Grand Prix, by continuing their rigorous testing programme.
The team decamped to Jerez in southern Spain this morning to try to find an improvement in the pace and driveability of the car, which has been found wanting.
On Tuesday, Jaguar will be represented by a single car, driven by test driver Luciano Burti. Race drivers Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine will arrive the day after. Burti will use the test chassis today, and hand over to Herbert tomorrow. Irvine will drive the Jaguar that was the spare car at Barcelona.
The team are keen to avoid last week's testing promise failing to turn into race pace.
"Last weekend we didn't really live up to the promise we showed at the Barcelona test," said Technical Director Gary Anderson.
"We tried some aerodynamic modifications that we hoped would move us into the battle for the points, but we just couldn't find the same pace. But we've got an extensive programme in place for the test at Jerez where we must start making progress."
The team has plenty to work on, with aerodynamic modifications and changes to the oil system in the pipeline. In addition, the team is keen to avoid the clutch problems that have caused poor starts, costing the Jaguar cars places.
Benetton, Jordan, McLaren, Williams, Sauber, BAR and Arrows are also due to test at Jerez this week.
