Adam Carroll wins at Mugello as Kevin Ceccon becomes Auto GP champion
Seventh place was enough for Kevin Ceccon to claim the Auto GP championship title as Adam Carroll ran away with the Mugello finale this afternoon
While poleman Carroll (Campos Racing) disappeared at the front to defeat Rio Haryanto (DAMS) by four seconds, it was a tense afternoon for the title contenders behind.
One of Ceccon's challengers, DAMS driver Sergei Afanasiev, fell out of the running instantly by stalling in third place on the grid. But in doing so he also compromised Ceccon's start - the championship leader was right behind him on the right hand side of the grid.
Filippi made the most of that, getting himself to fifth on the first lap, with Ceccon only eighth.
Ceccon's nine-point lead was still safe at that point, but his Ombra Racing team must have begun to worry when Filippi eased past Fabio Onidi (Lazarus) four laps into the race. If Filippi could find a way past Fabio Crestani's Lazarus car for third, and Ceccon stayed eighth, he would have tied Ceccon at the top of the table.
In the end, though, Filippi's challenge faded. Meanwhile Ceccon made his position a little more secure by passing the much slower Giovanni Venturini for seventh place - enough for Ceccon and his Ombra team to celebrate.
