Strakka Racing will enter the 2012 World Endurance Championship in LMP1
Strakka Racing will step up to LMP1 next year, after making the decision to enter the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship
The decision comes on the back of a hugely successful two seasons in LMP2 for the British privateer team, including a fifth place finish at the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours - the highest ever for a P2 entry.
Strakka will continue its collaboration with Honda Performance Development, which will design and build a new 3.4-litre V8 - and retain current drivers Nick Leventis, Jonny Kane and Danny Watts.
Wirth Research will design a brand new chassis, labelled the HPD ARX-03a.
The World Endurance Championship is a new venture for 2012, marking a collaboration between the FIA and ACO governing bodies. No calendar has been officially released but the Le Mans 24 Hours will be a points-scoring round.
Team principal Piers Phillips said the launch of the new championship had fitted perfectly with Strakka's growth plans and had therefore been too good to resist.
"The timing of this opportunity has been impeccable, and it's now ready to step up for the next challenge," he said. "We're relishing every challenge that next year throws up."
Strakka Racing already has form in LMP1, having run the Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S in the 2009 Le Man Series.
