Scott Dixon hopes his qualifying dominance sets a trend for the remainder of 2011

Scott Dixon hopes that his emphatic performance in qualifying will set a turn his fortunes around for the remainder of the 2011 season

Dixon's championship bid was hit hard in the early races, as bad luck contrived on several occasions to prevent him scoring highly.

Despite that, Dixon has managed to stay in touch with championship leader and team-mate Dario Franchitti and his main rival Will Power in the points - both of whom will start behind him on the second row in Sunday's race.

Dixon conceded that catching the duo remains a long shot, but he hopes his qualifying performance on Saturday sets a precedent for the rest of the season.

"For me its a case of taking each race by itself at the moment, but we hope (today) is a turning point and that we can finish it off tomorrow," said Dixon.

"We got the pole and that's what counts today - it's been a while for me, so it's nice to be back in that situation.

"Everyone knows however that there are so many things that can go wrong in a race, so we have to keep our fingers crossed and hope to have a smooth day, staying out of carnage as much as possible."

Asked about his championship ambitions, Dixon said: "It would have to be a hell of a charge wouldn't it, I'm a long way back.

"We just haven't really had the luck we have needed, and Dario has been stealing all the fame - so it's nice to at least get a pole for the season here."
