Jamie Whincup extends points lead by heading Triple Eight one-two in Townsville

Jamie Whincup extended his championship lead in V8 Supercars by coming through from eighth on the grid to head a Triple Eight Holden one-two in the second Townsville street race

A hard-charging first stint brought Whincup into contention at the front, and he then saved a set of soft tyres for the final part of the race, allowing him to pass Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom for second and then catch and pass his race-leading Triple Eight team-mate Craig Lowndes 18 laps from the end.

Poleman Lowndes had led most of the way up to then, once he had come out on top of an early battle with the faster-starting Winterbottom. They held on to second and third, with Winterbottom just ahead of Alex Davison's Stone Brothers Ford, while the latter's team-mate Shane van Gisbergen beat Garry Rogers Holden driver Lee Holdsworth to fifth.

Race one winner Garth Tander (HRT) was in podium contention until requiring a long pitstop for suspension repairs. Qualifying star David Reynolds tumbled down the order due to pit issues, while clashes between Will Davison and Jason Bright, and James Courtney and Tim Slade took all four out of the top six fight, with Bright and Courtney penalised. Slade made it back up to seventh with a superb late charge on soft tyres.
