Mirko Bortolotti completes double Nurburgring Formula 2 victory

Mirko Bortolotti stamped his authority on the Formula 2 championship by taking his second win of the weekend in this afternoon's race at the Nurburgring

The Italian converted his pole position into an immediate lead and controlled the race from the front.

Even a brief safety car period, caused by Johannes Theobald getting tipped into a roll at the final chicane, failed to knock Bortolotti off his stride.

Will Bratt made a strong start from third on the grid and jumped Tobias Hegewald into the first turn.

Bratt then kept pace with Bortolotti in the first half of the race, until his rear tyres faded and he fell away, eventually finishing four seconds adrift.

Another feisty performance lifted Christopher Zanella from seventh on the grid to the final podium spot. Having worked his way through to fourth in the opening five laps, the Swiss driver chased down Hegewald and eventually scrabbled by at the Mercedes Arena with three of the 20 laps to run.

Hegewald held on to take fourth, just six tenths clear of Alex Brundle, who is under investigation for his part in the incident that took out Theobald.

Mikkel Mac scored his best result of the season by completing the top six, while Miki Monras, Jack Clarke, Jordan King and Ramon Pineiro rounded out the top 10.

Following the race Monras was given a one-second penalty for overtaking by driving outside the circuit limits. This dropped him to eighth, behind Clarke.
