Bertrand Baguette to make GT1 World Championship debut with Marc VDS at Navarra

Bertrand Baguette will make his GT1 World Championship debut at Navarra this weekend with the Marc VDS team

The 25-year-old Belgian, who finished seventh at the Indianapolis 500 last month, will fill in for team regular Frederic Makowiecki as the Frenchman is on Intercontinental Le Mans Cup duties at Imola instead.

"When [team owner] Marc van der Straten offered me the chance to drive for his team at Navarra, I said yes immediately," Baguette said.

"It's a great opportunity for me and I'm really happy to be racing in such a closely contested championship with a team that has already proved competitive this season.

"I raced the 24 Hours of Spa a few years ago and I also tested the Corvette briefly, but that's about it for my previous GT experience. But Romain Grosjean came from single-seater racing and was immediately fast in the Ford GT car last year, so it shouldn't be too complicated."

Baguette, who will share the Ford GT with fellow Belgian Maxime Martin, completed half a season in IndyCar last year with Conquest Racing, but has not raced in 2011 other than his Indy 500 appearance with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Prior to that he won the 2009 Formula Renault 3.5 title and tested for both the Renault and Sauber F1 teams.
