Silverstone takes drastic action

Organisers were battling on Friday to save the British Grand Prix.

Silverstone has closed all public car parks for qualifying day as Britain's premier's motor sporting event descended into chaos as it was hit by torrential Easter rain.

Officials said the decision was taken after a detailed assessment of the ground and consultation with the police. Heavy rain in the build-up to the event has caused damage and flooding to many of the car parks.

On Thursday afternoon the circuit halted ticket sales because of water damage to the parking areas.

'The action taken will enable work to be undertaken on Saturday so they [the car parks] are ready to cope with vehicles arriving for the main event, the Grand Prix race, on Sunday,' the circuit said in a statement.

The car parks will still be open for coaches. Officials apologised to fans and said they should retain tickets and wait to be contacted so refunds can be arranged.

They advised race day ticket holders to leave plenty of additional time for the journey and parking.
