Grapevine: Rankings: Ogier on the march
The Castrol EDGE Rankings this week contain the usual melange of high risers and sharp fallers, but this time around there is also something rather unexpected
The man on the move in the right direction is undoubtedly Citroen rally star Sebastien Ogier, whose win on the Acropolis lifts him five places to a best-ever 12th spot in the Rankings. The Greek success also pushes him up to third in the EDGE Race for 2011, behind Formula 1 dominator Sebastian Vettel and Ogier's team-mate Sebastien Loeb.
Loeb, meanwhile, drops one place to third (behind F1 man Mark Webber) after taking second on the Acropolis and dropping his win from last year's Rally Bulgaria under the Rankings' 12-month rollover system.
The sharp faller is IndyCar racer Ryan Briscoe. Similarly to Loeb, he discards a big score (last year's win in Texas) under the rollover and this weekend picked up only an 11th at Milwaukee, due in part to a pit incident. This drops him five places to 23rd. Race winner Dario Franchitti consolidates eighth in the Rankings, moving much closer to seventh-placed Jenson Button.
And the unexpected? Try NASCAR Sprint Cup race winner Denny Hamlin, who triumphed at Michigan Speedway yet drops two places to 15th! That's because he also won this race last year, but in 2010 he qualified better and led the most laps, meaning a net loss of points for the Toyota man under the rollover system.
Elsewhere, Lausitz DTM victor Martin Tomczyk continues to rise the Rankings, the Audi man making up eight places to go 83rd, while Bruno Spengler (44) and Timo Scheider (53) are also moving up.
The World Touring Car Championship served up another weekend of domination for Chevrolet at Brno, with race winners Rob Huff and Yvan Muller moving up to 48th and 56th respectively.
For this week's high risers, look to reigning World GT1 champion Andrea Bertolini and rejuvenated IndyCar ace Oriol Servia. Bertolini, now driving a Maserati in the Superstars touring car series, won both races at Donington Park and is up 77 places to 150th, while Servia was third in the Milwaukee IndyCar race and is up 67 at 157th.
