Bayne to miss Nationwide race

Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne has been hospitalised and will not compete in this weekend's Nationwide Series race at Richmond

The 21-year-old American was taken to hospital last month following the Sprint Cup race at Texas after an insect bite to the elbow earlier that week caused him to fall ill.

Roush Fenway Racing, for which Bayne races in the Nationwide Series, said that his symptoms included fatigue and nausea and could possibly be related to his previous incident.

"Trevor was not feeling well early this week and he is currently being evaluated for lingering symptoms that may be related to his previous insect bite," said team president Steve Newmark.

"Unfortunately Trevor will not be available to drive for us this weekend in the Nationwide race at Richmond. As of now, our plans are to use a substitute driver from the Roush Fenway family of drivers in place of Trevor at Friday night's race."

"Obviously Trevor wanted to be in Richmond and he's upset about not being able to compete. However, his health is our top priority and we insisted that he have these tests to get to the bottom of his symptoms."

Bayne, who is fifth in the Nationwide standings, was not scheduled to compete in the Sprint Cup at Richmond as the Wood Brothers Racing team has failed to raise the budget for a full season.

He is due to compete in a Cup car next at the non-championship All-Star race at Charlotte.
