Sousa finding WRC a big step up

Bernardo Sousa has admitted the switch from a Super 2000 to a World Rally Car for this week's Rally of Portugal has been harder than he imagined

Sousa is making his debut in a top-level rally car on his home event in Portugal this week, having previously driven in the Production Car and S2000 World Rally Championships.

"It has been harder than I thought," he said. "Anybody who says that these World Rally Cars are closer to S2000 cars is telling a lie. It's very different in the World Rally Car, the engine has so much power, it's incredible."

Sousa only completed 30 miles of testing prior to the start of the Rally of Portugal, but he is already holding a top-10 position on the Faro-based WRC round.

"The big differences are in the engine and in the aerodynamics," he said. "It's awesome the way you can put this car into a slide and keep it there, knowing you have the torque to come through the corner."

Despite the promise he's showing at the highest level, Sousa says his Portuguese outing is likely to be his only WRC drive this season.

"We don't have the budget to do any more," he said. "After this, we're back to the Super 2000 car for the Jordan Rally. I'm happy with the way everything is going, really happy, now we need to make sure it continues like this until the end."
