Wilson buoyed by Portugal start

Matthew Wilson, Stobart Ford, Portugal 2011Matthew Wilson says his pre-event test has given him more confidence than ever in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC on this week's Rally of Portugal.

The Cumbrian drove his Stobart Ford for a day, completing 60 miles of testing on Monday, and says he is pleased with his start to the third round of the World Rally Championship. Wilson was sixth when he returned to service in Faro at lunchtime today, having been slowed by an engine glitch on the morning's final test.

"The morning has gone well," said Wilson. "We haven't been going flat out, we've been sensible, but having the test has really helped me get in the car and get on it.

"We had a really good test. We tried a couple of new things and, hopefully, this can be quite a good step with the car - it's starting to suit me more. For the first couple of rallies, we didn't have any other options with the differential because of lack of availability, which was okay.

"The car is now starting to go more towards how I would have picked it to drive. The diff is less aggressive, you can manage to keep it in the line. In Mexico, when it was really loose, the car was always trying to come out of the line.

"Let's just hope we can keep this good start going and pick up some more speed that's the aim for the rest of the event."
